I can't find the strip online, so I can't link it, but here's the dialog from a Calvin & Hobbes:

Calvin: What's this music?
Hobbes: It's "The 1812 Overture."
Calvin: I kinda like it. Interesting percussion section.
Hobbes: Those are cannons.
Calvin: And they perform this in crowded concert halls?? Gee, I thought classical music was boring!

My brother is working on his Ph.D. in music, and I recently asked him when he decided he wanted to be a musician. He related a tale of when he was in middle school and they were invited to a concert at the high school. The band director was retiring, and he was apparently going out with a bang -- so to speak. This high school band proceeded to perform the 1812 Overture inside their high school auditorium. They had a guy on stage with a 12 gauge shotgun firing live rounds into a pile of sandbags. Then, because there's also supposed to be rifle fire involved, one guy was assigned to light the wick on a string of firecrackers in a bag and toss it under the bleachers that the band was standing on. When he tossed the bag of firecrackers, he fell backwards off the platform. Apparently they hadn't rehearsed with the firecrackers, so the musicians were quite startled when the firecrackers started going off. Meanwhile, the shots into the sandbags had launched a bunch of dust into the air, and this mixed with the smoke from the shotgun and set off the fire alarms in the building. The band just kept on playing with the fire alarms blaring, and the crowd didn't know whether they were supposed to stay or get up and leave.

Yup--I imagine THAT scene would "ignite" the fires of an impressionable young lad! Could you even think of the repercussions if a band director tried that in today's high schools? Terrio--who loves a great story (my brother has his degree in music also)

I play the violin, and when I was in 8th grade we got to perform the 1812 Overture with the high school orchestra, in a nearby college's music hall. We had an off-duty cop firing blanks into the back alley for the cannon part, and it sounded awesome. The local cable company was taping the concert to replay on their community channel, and alas, on the taped showing, the gun sounded like nothing more than a cap-gun, not that big, booming cannon sound.

We had two off-duty cops firing blanks for a community band performance of the 1812 Overture. Unfortunately, they didn't know the music and therefore didn't know when to fire. They were always late in firing because they had to watch for the director to point at them. *rolling eyes*

Live rounds would have sounded better yet. Blanks provide a loud bang, which arguably works well enough for music, but live rounds make a very distinctive sound that comes from the energy expelling the projectile before suddenly being released when the projectile leaves the barrel. Of course, even a shotgun won't replicate a cannon properly.

The local cable company was taping the concert to replay on their community channel, and alas, on the taped showing, the gun sounded like nothing more than a cap-gun, not that big, booming cannon sound.

It would be an impressive sound system indeed that could properly reproduce the sound of gunfire. It would require both thousands of watts and remarkable fidelity. The 1812 Overture is something you really need to experience performed live.

Not all of us were around in 1812, Kirbert!

I always wondered about that, because when the 1812 Overture was written, cannons themselves didn't fire instantaneously. They involved a little wick of sorts and would typically fire a second or two after lit. Getting them to go off precisely in time with music woulda been tough.

Well, for now, I'll settle for watching the fireworks from DC. I love it when they crank into the 1812 Overture. I think they use howitzers for the cannon fire. Whatever it is, it is really cool. :-)

Nope, different brother. I have five brothers: One was killed in Vietnam, one is a retired AF pilot, one is a nudist, one is a doctor and one is a musician and hiker. That last one is presently hiking in Iceland.

Wow! 6 boys. What an interesting household it must have been growing up. And such diverse interests and personalities, it sounds like. I would think the nudist would have musical/hiking tendencies. Hm.
