HH etiquette
Board: Hitchhikers, Cooties, and Fleas

So...I signed up for LbNA out of curiousity to see if there were any boxes in my area that weren't listed on Atlas Quest. The vast majority of the boxes only had attempted finds and the planters haven't logged in in over a year. However, I have found one that looks promising and my question is this: Should I leave a HH I found in an AQ box in LbNA box?

Sure, but I would try to find a box that is fairly active, with lots of finds logged in fairly recently on either AQ or lbna.

Just a question....

Wouldn't the person who then created this HH on AQ thereby lose visibility of the HH and its travels as long as it remains in LBNA boxes? Granted, it might come back to AQ boxes at some point, but the travel log will only show the AQ boxes online. Now, the hardcopy logbook would show the true story hopefully though, unless someone forgets to stamp in the host boxes as it travels. Is that right?

If you're speaking in terms of etiquette, you can leave a HH in any traditional box you want to. Letterboxes are letterboxes. The fact that one is listed on any particular site means nothing in that respect. I'm not sure how you knew the last time a planter logged in to LBNA. As far as I know, you only see the placement date. That doesn't mean they never log onto the site.

I've looked at a number of listed members on AQ who haven't done any boxing at all since they joined 2-3 years ago, or almost none. I'm sure there are more than the ones I saw.

Lots of people check both sites when they are looking for boxes in a particular area. Both sites have their uses. For the most part I look at AQ but the listing by county on LBNA can be useful.

Choosing a box in an *area* that is fairly active is something you would want to do, but you can't guarantee that a HH is going to be found in any given amount of time. That's one of the chances you take when you take a HH and put it somewhere.

Letterboxing was here before either site. Don't assume that because some list their boxes only on LBNA that they are not active boxers. There are some veteran boxes who choose not to list on any site.

If you create a HH you should put some kind of e-mail address inside so that people have a way of getting in touch with you without having to depend on a web site.

On LbNA there is a cobweb icon beside the user's trailname that indicates their lack of activity.

Yeah, that certainly makes sense. I was just trying to say that the online travel log would not reflect properly where it has truly travelled if it went between AQ and LBNA.

I am not saying that matters a whole lot, because when/if you receive your full logbook back it will properly reflect where it has travelled.

I am certainly not saying that you shouldn't put the HH in an LBNA letterbox, I was just bringing up a point for anyone that was reading.

Thanks!

Sure, there's nothing wrong with that. You could also leave a HH in a box that's listed on a private website or distributed as a WOM clue. All traditional letterboxes are equivalent regardless of where the clue is listed, imho.

The only letterbox I'd avoid leaving a HH in is a LB Hybrid listed on the geocaching site.

If it's been more than a year, a little cobweb icon appears on their box listings.

They implemented the feature in November, so it's relatively new.

Great tips everyone. I just carved my 1st HH and will be placing it soon. So I include the HH and a small logbook, making sure I include my personal email address and some info about what a HH is. Keep this all together in one baggie. Is that all?

I stumbled on this post while looking for guidance...

Did you check to see if the hitchhiker was listed on LBNA? Some hitchhikers are listed on both. I list all my traditional plants on both sites. (Signed up for LBNA one week before Atlas Quest)
