Find Count not matching up
Board: Bug Reports
Apr 17, 2024 8:42am
Thread Board
When I "Download Data" "Finds and Attempts" my count for everything other than "traditional" isn't matching up with the totals under my profile on AQ. The count for "traditional" matches and so do the totals for everything on "Plants". But for finds, I'm off on eventBox, hitchhiker, ltc, other, postal, and traveler. Some are under and some are over and the total of all is off.

Correction:

The "traveler" and "other" totals are correct. My issues are with "eventBox", "hitchhiker", "ltc", and "postal".

My issues are with "eventBox", "hitchhiker", "ltc", and "postal".

I took a look at the eventBox's, and I'm not seeing a problem. Your profile shows 279 event box finds. Your logbook shows 279 event box finds. (240 listed finds and 39 unlisted finds.) And your downloaded data from the spreadsheet shows 279 event box finds (again, with 240 listed finds and 39 unlisted ones).

I haven't looked at the other types since I can't even find the problem with your event box counts. What numbers are wrong? Can you be more specific about exactly what you're counting or excluding?

ok given the numbers you shared it's the "unlisted finds" that are pulling off. I don't see the "unlisted finds" on the "Finds & Attempts" I'm downloading. Do I need to pull a separate report for those?

Ok, I get it now, didn't realize I needed to pull "Unlisted" separate. All straight now. Thank you both :)

yup, and if you are trying to track milestone finds, remember to "merge" the unlisted finds and the listed finds to find your "true milestone" box.

I am (rather belatedly) trying to make a spreadsheet to track all my plants and finds by certain criteria.

Still a bit confused. (I want to be sure it is listed correctly, as I have quite a few that follow a theme. I apologize for the lengthy clarification below, but so appreciate your knowledge!)

To clarify, I list a series as "Black Trail". Then, I add 3 boxes underneath that series (Night, Widow, Bird). These are not listed with separate AQ #s. This is the only place I added them.

Now, I add the clue which will be clues that go in order to be found. For example, the trail is a loop.... (Night) Go to the first bench. Look behind for SPOR (Widow) Count the blazes, 1-2-3, just behind the 3rd blaze, look for the large fallen tree. (Bird) Continue on towards the water. Near the boulders, look between the 2 sister trees.

After adding the clue, the series will have 1 AQ#, but each box in series, when found, will each list as a find.

So, I do not have to list each box individually, with a separate AQ#. Instead, I can list as a series, to be found all in order as mentioned above.

Is that correct?

Correct.

The series has one AQ#. Each box within the series is listed individually (no AQ #) and counts as a find on each box.

Maybe this helps? It's a series I found recently.

Thanks RIclimber! This tip helped A LOT! This time, I saw all the markers I was looking for so far. (didn't make it all the way around). Now I'm having the sneaking suspicion most of the markers ARE still there but just that the trails are so twisty and windy that I looked in the wrong places last time. Blush. I was just navigating with a paper map so it was much harder to find the intersections where the markers should be. Open Street Maps app helped SO much. Man, this place is tricky. I'm over 200 boxes and I've never been somewhere where I needed a GPS to help me.

Foster box

I just rec’d a notification for a find on a box that is not mine, but I am listed as a ‘Foster’. That is OK, but it was a surprise to me. When Fosters are assigned, do you typically notify the person who is a foster?

Thanks

fostered box
An abandoned box listing on Atlas Quest that someone else volunteers to maintain. If you foster a box, you will receive notifications about all finds and attempts on the box and you can add an addendum to the box to communicate information for future finders, but otherwise you cannot edit the listing in any other manner.

Happens automatically.

I thought you meant you fostered it. As far as I know no one else can name you as a foster owner. You have to do it. I never heard of it being assigned. News to me! Does someone else have access to your account?

You have to do it. I never heard of it being assigned.

A while back, I happened to be looking at my stats, and saw that I was fostering a couple of boxes. I had never been notified and had no idea. They were boxes I donated to an event (listed as carver), and were left permanently planted after the event. The boxes' owner/planter had not been active for several years, and somehow I got "assigned" foster duty. They are in another state so no way am I able to care for them, so I just took myself off the boxes as a "foster".

You have to click the "foster me" button. They are not assigned automatically.

I will mention, however, that there is no confirmation about "are you sure you want to foster this box"--it happens immediately as soon as you click the button. There is a "cancel" option, but it's more of an "undo" thing. You're already a fosterer, and clicking the cancel just removes you as the fosterer. If you "return" to the box page or use the back button on your browser, you'll still be the fosterer, though.

At some point, though, you clicked the "foster me" link, which made you the foster parent, and you never removed yourself after that. It might not have been what you intended and you thought you were looking at a confirmation page (i.e. "are you sure you want to do this") rather than a confirmation page (i.e. "Congrats! You ARE the fosterer!") so didn't remove yourself.

But clicking that "foster me" link is the only way to become a foster parent. =)

I suspect this is what caused the problem, so I updated the confirmation page to confirm that you really want to foster a box before assigning it, so anyone curious what the "foster me" link does doesn't inadvertently become a fosterer in the future.

Now you need to click the "foster me" link and the "Confirm" button in order to become a foster parent.

How do you typically write the clues for boxes you’ve planted? Are they step-by-step, cryptic or vague, do you use ciphers, photo clues, etc?

The majority of my clues are a like a set of directions. But every now and then I throw in a photo, a code or even just a couple of words that lead you to where you will find the box.
