besides which, my post was written in good humor. I really was amused by the comment.

Kind of leads me back to my comment two days ago.. it's overwhelming for a newcomer...

Go to that event and have the time of your life. I would think the experience referenced would be very rare.

Also, read these tips for attending an event, and go prepared like a good scout. ;-)

If someone treats you nasty . . . send that person to the tent and keep your yummy treats with you so you can share them with the other very nice guests.

they suddenly stop being the ignorant newbie

ok...does anyone (including newbies) see something wrong with that remark?

Sorry about that. I was asking if that's what Eidolon thinks. He said something about how he ignores all posts with 1 streamer ribbons, which means he wouldn't have read mine but I just had to vent. Should've worded it better.

I got your point. And your right, if he just skimmed right on past like he claimed, then we would all be with a few less negative comments on all the boards.

There is NOTHING wrong with being a newbie. This is the place to ask question, and get HELP. I don't care how many boxes you've found (or haven't found), it doesn't make you a better person. MOST people on this site are wonderful people and will be happy to give good advice while being supportive. There's just a few bad Eggs.

No apoligies needed :) I understood exactly were you were/are coming from, I just felt that the newbie remark needed pointed out. It has been...end of story.

but I just had to vent
Good enough...never hurts to do that...just hurts if you don't :)

That made me LOL!
Makes mental note = Nasty people get sent to their tent = no bug spray = no flashlight = get their shoe laces tied together :->

Better yet, when I get around to the next step, I'll make my 1st LTC of yummy treats so it will remind me of "this" forever :-D

Thanks for the tips link. I've already sorted out all the PT's by who is only there for the day vs those who are there overnight. I'll get the overnight people the next morning when I knock on their tent door. I'm really looking forward to the event in two weeks!

Thanks to those who wrote privately as well. It was nice to wake up to a few pieces of AQ mail!!

I created an account on Meetup.com

Is there something we should know? Are we not enough anymore? You need other than Letterboxers to Meetup with?
And does Amanda know what you're up to?
Just kidding. (wink wink nudge nudge say no more. say no more.)

Not really, and yes, Amanda knows all about it. I'd read in the latest issue of the Washington Trails Magazine of some hiking and backpacking groups on meetup.com and thought I'd check a couple of them out. Especially now that I don't have a car on my own, it could be especially useful if I can latch onto some other groups for rides to a trailhead. ;o)

And heck, hiking with others is almost always more fun than hiking by oneself. =)

I also happened to notice a couple of Spanish speaking groups I might check out someday.....

Normally I don't jump into the arguments but I feel the need to comment here. I have only been letterboxing for a couple of months and have been using this sight almost exclusively. The sight is extensive but easy to figure out. Although the formula for the ribbons does show the geekieness of the sight developer it is easy to scroll over the ribbon or go to the persons profile if you want to know how many boxes they found. There are some things I still don't fully understand that I am sure I will figure out in time. such as LTCs. But honestly the only thing I really have a problem with is figuring out the clues to the darn mystery boxes. Seriously, some of them are so obscure I am sure I am missing something. It leaves me wondering how anyone figured it out, or wondering if I am just really stupid:) Anyhow, like anything fun you have to spend time learning about it. Did you learn to ski in one day, ride a bike, etc...

I did learn how to ski in one very long day. Riding a bike took me about a week to learn, though. I'm still learning how to letterbox. ;o)

Those darn mystery boxes ...
Sometimes it helps to phone a friend (preferably a non-letterboxing, puzzle person)
Sometimes it helps to google
Sometimes it helps to forget about it/sleep on it
Sometimes, you just get lucky when you are driving around town running errands and all of a sudden, you actually see what was cryptically described in the clues.

Yes use your lifelines for sure... but I agree usually a little research or a bit of luck or sudden "aha" moment - As Dartmoor Dreamer said suddenly you remember a place that fits the clue or you see it - That is all that is needed to find many a mystery box. Whats frustrating is when you know where it is but its like a three hour drive :o)

Re Mysteries: Never feel stupid or intimidated by mysteries. I love them and spend a lot of time solving them but you can have a wonderful letterboxing experience by never doing a mystery. I will pass on though the fact that there are many websites such as www.braingle.com and other decoder sites which can help with solving some of the coded messages. The crytic clues which hone in on a local site--many of us may never solve those.

Hope this hint helps.

Wow you learned to ski in one day. Impressive! I have a pair of shoes that took me several days to learn how to put on easily. Of course they are Vibram Five Fingers so they aren't your ordinary shoe:)

I wonder if shoes like this would be good for Robb? it says they increase muscle stimulation, strength, balance, and neural feedback to the rest of the body.

Yeah, they are kind of ugly aren't they, although my husband thinks they look cool. They are soooo comfortable though, and work great for hiking especially if you like splashing around in the creeks like I do.

I have really weak ankles and they have helped a lot. Each time I hike my feet and ankle muscles get sore towards the end but in a worked out way, not a I twisted my ankle a billion times on the hike way. You also end up paying way more attention to how you walk and I noticed my calves hurt less too.

how expensive are these shoes, and do you think they would be good protection against cactus spines?

They are around $80.00 so not a cheap investment. I wouldn't want to wear them around cactus spines. They really only protect the bottom of your foot and the front of your toes. The sole isn't really thick so a spine might go right through and the top is mesh so it definitely wouldn't stop a spine. I live in Georgia so I have only tried them out on sharp rocks and roots. You can feel the rocks but they don't hurt unless you come down really hard on a pointy one.

How are these fixed for arch support? I have "flexible flat feet" (when I stand up my arch flattens out--not comfortable) and need good arch support for hiking.
