Calling all carvers!

Last year, for my first hosted gather, I had asked the letterboxing community for some assistance in gathering stamps. Last years theme was New Hampshire State History. The response was overwelming. Everyone was so awesome in their willingness to help.

This year, I might be reaching well over my head, but this years event is called "Inaugural Ball." Being that next year, we will be welcoming a new president into the White House, whether you like him or not. What I would like to do this year, is carve stamps of all the presidents of the past. This is a new one for me. I have only carved 1 stamp of a person. I plan on carving atleast 5, or atleast I hope thats all i have to carve of these past Presidents. This means that there are still 39 more presidents. Is anyone willing to help out this year? My stamps probably won't be the greatest carves, so don't sweat it if you don't think your that great.

I have 4 months until my gather. Let me know if your interested.

If someone can teach me how to carve faces, I would carve presidents. But, I have been unsuccessful at taking photos of people and turning them into carves that look like the person. I need to see the black and white to carve. For the shading, I need it to already be dotty or hatched or ... And, I don't have any of those programs others have.

BSuzy,
See T2 at one of these events -- he loves carving people and is better than me at it -- he'll show you how -- he generally doesn't use the shading that some people with those programs use!

Hi, David-

Don't know if we've ever talked but I feel like I know you. You've done some exchanges with my twin Travel'n Turtle, I believe. I'd love to do some carves. I'm related to two of the presidents (2nd - John Adams & 6th - John Quincy Adams)!!! :-D Will you keep the stamps and plant them afterwards? Should I send logbooks too? What size would you like?

~Butterfly Suzy,

Try this link:

http://www.dumpr.net/sketch.php

You attach a photo, and it comes back to you as a sketch with all of the shading etc. done for you.

i haven't decided out right, what i will be doing with the stamps after the gather, but i did concider sneding them to other people of which the presidents represented in states. for example, franklin pierce was from new hampshire, so the stamp would be planted. i would turn it into a huge series across the country. or i thought about a traveling presidental event box. the ideas are up in the air and are just in the back of my mind roght now. i'm more worried about collecting all 44 presidental stamps first.

thanks for all those that have offered so far.
email me with any offers to carve.
it is easier for me to save them that way.

There were some president stamps that have circluated as postals. You may want to get to search for them and contact owners. I also know of a Woodrow Wilson stamp in Virginia. Not sure if the owner would do a re-carve. Just some thoughts that might help.

I'm not from anywhere near new hampshire but I would love the challenge. I've only done one portrait stamp and it was so much fun. I'd like to do sombody weird like Chester Arthur or William Taft. Please let me know for for sure if you are still in need of carvers.

BSuzy. If you do one of the more well known presidents, you could easily find a silhouette of them and do that... think of the ones on coins... Lincoln, Washington, etc. I bet there is a presidential coloring book out there with line drawings in it. I would also do a google search for images and use the advanced search feature to choose. B&W or greyscale and there nay be some line drawings. How about a tracing of one of the older pieces of paper money.

Coins work well also. We did the front & back of a bicentennial dollar for Eisenhower in last year's president ring.

That's a great web site! One thing I did find a bit humorous: All the Presidents are poised in some sort of stately manner - Then there's GWB at the kiddie swing!!!! What's up with that????????? Too Funny! :o)

Ok, team NH, I got a lot of carving ideas. I will try a "real" portrait. More than one, even. However many. IF you are ok at the end with the coloring book style portrait or a silhouette, if I cannot get the "real" portrait to work. Just assign me whomever, other than the current president, and however many. Well, however many within reason. :D

Me too! Did one of the Queen on our 50p coin (back and front carving). Simply got a stamp pad of the coin, stamped it on paper then coloured it with my pencil, pressed it on my rubber and Bob's your uncle! :-D

so far it doesn't sound like that minght happen. i have gotten some emails stating, people would like their stamps back. if this does happen, i could send those that are ok with the idea out to those states, and carve new stamps after the gather to the other states that didn't get their president representative. in the end, this could be a win, win situation. what ever everyone wants to do with their box is fine with me.
