I actually prefaced that with "...my unofficial post reading filter...". I never said I don't read. I said I mentally filter them. Why? It keeps me from immediately making smart assed replies and scaring off those who may be less experienced boxers. I sometimes TRY to be more "politely negative" with them when it is called for. I guess you didn't realize my prejudice might be a good thing since you were too hung up on the second half of the phrase.

Eidolon... it was easy to misunderstand that post of yours..... but after reading your explaination, I agree that we should appreciate your "Filter". I got YELLED at at the very first event I ever attended. We hadn't been letterboxing long at all ....... and I talked about something that I wasn't supposed to according to the "rules". I wish the person would have had your filter...... and quietly advised me that I had BLUNDERED, instead of yelling at me in front of 50 people.

Hey, I love the new ribbons, too. It's so good to see the numbers back........it's only 10:45 AM on the west coast........so this post isn't as late as it may seem to be..........

BIG BIG Hugs to you for that experience. Glad you stuck around after that!

My experience in 2006: I had finally met LBer's one month before and I went to Stargazer's Consortium in July, a 2 night campout.

I had been told about in plain site boxes, PT's, etc.

I went through all the PT's listed for the event, printed out the clue and the answer on cardstock, chopped them into little strips and attached them all with a plastic tie.

When I got to someone, and solved it, I ripped it off the tie and threw it away.

I have always been very grateful to Maiden and Camp Fire Lady because when they saw something odd, they came up to me in person and asked what I was doing. They hadn't know me long, I was LBing after 2 years away and I wasn't that experienced.

Basically, when I threw away my PT slips, someone at the event noticed them, dug them out of the trash and placed them on the main clue table. Everyone could get PT's for free without researching.

I was able to answer their questions about what I was doing with my PT clues/answers honestly that I was of course throwing them away.

They were wonderful to ask gently before accusing me and make sure I understood ettiquette on stuff.

After that, I ripped them into shreds and piled food on them . . .

As Lock Wench says, "Nice counts" and it's sure nice when experienced LBer's take the time to be kind to newbies and help them.

I am sorry, but if you are throwing things away in the TRASH and someone else feels the need to dig them out and display them for all to see, that person needs to be yelled at! Are they really that desperate that they would stoop to that level just to get one more stamp?! *sigh*

That is truly pathetic in my book... them, not you =o)

Personally I take all my PT answers home with me, and now I sure am glad that I do =o)

Cheers!

Wow, I hope they talked to the person who went so far as to pick through the garbage to get your PT slips. Placing them on the table for others to see, that's where the 2nd a more grievous etiquette problem occurred. My guess is a kid may have done this thinking they were being helpful. I like your method of organizing PTs for an event. I can see being told that someone was taking advantage of your system but not in a tone that suggested that you were at fault. But tearing up the pieces is good advice.

No one knew who did it. That's why Maiden & Camp Fire Lady approached me, because it might have been me.

Like I said, I am grateful to Maiden & CFL for wanting to ask me what I was doing first and then, if I was doing this "grievous ettiquette problem" (nice phrase!), they would have instructed me.

It could have been a kid thinking they were helping, so that's a good spin to put on it.

Needless to say, the problem stopped when I started ripping em up!

Quote what the heck is a PT slip?

That's in reference to my post. It was a personal traveler slip/strip of paper.

At my first big event at a campout, I printed out all the personal traveler clues and the answers I had gotten.

I ran them off and cut them into strips and attached them to a plastic tie. That way, I could flip through and find the one(s) for a LBer (I had them in alpha order), tell them the answer and then rip out that slip. That way, my slips got fewer and easier to find.

It was a nice little system for such a big event. Trying to shuffle through pages of papers can get old over 2-3 days can get old.

Sounds like something you buy at Victorias Secret. LOL
She's referring to the little slips of paper she makes for PT answers at gatherings.

It is overwhelming to a newcomer. Believe me, Put yourself in the shoes of someone JUST starting.

The site wasn't all that different 2 years ago when I started. I started out on LbNA, then found AQ. I have *never* found this site confusing or overwhelming. Everything is so readily available under the top menus - help, glossaries, links galore! I do, however, find LbNA very confusing and not user-friendly. I can't say I dislike it, it just isn't my preference. I have used AQ ever since. I think this site is FUN and full of information. It is exactly what Ryan intended it to be - a COMMUNITY. We have it all here! Clue listing of every kind, events, information, chat boards...you name it!

I don't think that most of the people who choose not to log their finds are doing it because they don't care for the ribbon colors on the chat boards (or whatever other little thing like that). Heck, they probably don't even read the chat boards! You don't have to understand some little ribbon color to enjoy the site, really. :o) I can't figure out what else might be considered a nuisance, though. ::shrug:: To each his own, right?

So what, you just assume that just because someone hasn't found 100 letterboxes yet, they don't have anything valuable to say? How do you get by in th real world, then? I'm sure your employer doesn't letterbox, therefore they don't have 100 finds, so you just ignore them? What about non-letterboxing family members? Do you ignore them, too? You think that once someone finds 100 letterboxes, they suddenly stop being the ignorant newbie and they're enlightened somehow?

We love your stats: 1,000 finds and 100 plants! Congratulations. If only we all could plant a box for every 10 we find. Way to go.

I am not going there with a take on someone's opinion on whether a newbie would be worthy of much on here, that is just an opinion...but ignorant...uh no I don't think so.
Shouldn't this be FUN?

You're taking it out of context. The poster was making a saarcastic reply to another post but I get the meaning.

I'm a newbie to rock climbing therefore I'm ignorant to some of the terminology and techniques of the acitvity. That does not mean that I have a low IQ I'm just not informed to the ways of the activity.

:-O
That scares me to half to death since I'm attending my first event soon. When someone treats me nasty (like I'm stupid) I tend to get really hurt/offended. Good Lord, I hope it doesn't happen to me, I'll just go sleep in my tent and I'll take all my rice crispie treats with me...

Kind of leads me back to my comment two days ago.. it's overwhelming for a newcomer...

Us newbies ARE TRYING REALLY HARD..

And TY Ryan for binging back the numbers in the ribbons...
