Why do doggies not like Dina B ???

Friends, I had another bad dog experience today.
I boxed with Chihuahua Grande' down in Greenville SC for the whole day. Early in the day we were at ROCK QUARRY FALLS, near Cleveland Park. We passed a lady with a Westmoreland Terrier. ........ We took different routes getting back.... Emily crossed the water and I went back the way we came. That little dog lunged at me , growling and bit my leg !!
Tore a hole in my new pants and bit me, the little bugger. I don't know why. I was just passing by him like I did before. The lady was apologetic, kept asking if I was OK. I was more scared than hurt, though it did leave a mark and tore a hole in my pants.
I didn't pitch a fit or anything. I wasn't "Hurt" really. It looks not too bad... hurts a little.
I said to Emily "I don't know why...... I have had 2 bad doggie experiences while out letterboxing..... and I LIKE Doggies".......
Emily's response to that was...... "I think it's safe to assume that the feeling is NOT mutual.... Dina B. likes doggies.... but clearly doggies do NOT like Dina B."
Sad face......

Oh well. I'm taking Charlie letterboxing with me tomorrow. If anything bites me, he'll bite them back. "hahahahaha"

What the heck? Wasn't it on a leash? If she can't control her dog it shouldn't be out at a public park. What if it had been a kid it lunged at?! Did she at least reimburse you for the pants?

I agree. If she couldn't keep a Westmoreland from jumping you, thank goodness she didn't have an Akita or something that could have done lots more damage.

Unfortunately, many people think that controlling a dog means just having them on a leash. Once they're there, you don't have to give a thought to what the dog might do. That is wrong. Even the best dog can have an off day and she should have been more than apologetic. She sure should have offered to give you money for the pants.

Glad you're OK (mostly) and really worried that I'm agreeing with Mama Wolf quite often these days. :-)

And did you insist that she show you the date on the rabies tag? Did ya know that in the first stages of rabies they show no noticeable signs. did the dog break the skin????

I never go boxing without my stun gun.

Ohhh...poor you!! I sent you a hug. I'm sorry that little doggie got you. Bad, bad dog!! Did you ask if he was updated on his shots? If it broke the skin, be sure and treat it real good or it could end up very infected. Do you remember when the neighbors cat used Cameron's leg as a climbing post? It was pretty infected...but luckily, no cat scratch fever!!

Take good care!! I'm counting on seeing you this weekend.
Hugs,

Thanks for your concern friends.

I was more scared than hurt. It didn't puncture.... more of a scratch with a bruise. I have kept it clean... had a bandaid on it for a while. I'll put some more antibiotic stuff on it. I'm sure it'll be fine. I'll watch it close for infection.

The dog was on a leash and I passed by her a few feet away... not close enough to brush against her or anything. He was on one of those retractable leashes I think.

No, she didn't offer to reimburse me for my pants..... and I just let it go.
I don't think he was an "ugly" dog ..... I have no clue what made him bite me.

It did kind of put a damper on the rest of the day.

I don't like these. I see far too many people who let their dogs go too far from them on these things to be able to reliably control them. I know they have locks so that the dog is not supposed to be able to pull the leash longer if you don't want them to, but I honestly think most people don't know how to use them.

Last dog I had was always leash walked (non-retractable) and, when we came up on people on the trail, he went on the side away from them and I wound the leash up around my hand very short so he couldn't jump on them. (I had a rather large, intimidating dog at that time. Those were the days!)

Sorry to go on and on, but the way some people allow their dogs to behave on the trail is a pet peeve of mine. *shrug*

My thoughts exactly. I probably would've called animal control even though it would've put a big dent in your boxing day. Even if the dog's shots are up to date, there are a lot of nasty germs floating around in a dog's mouth and I'd hate for you to get an infection.

I have a (90 lb) dog and cats, too. Part of being a good pet owner is keeping your pet under control. I have to admit that I will let my dog off-leash on a remote trail, but if I hear or see anyone, he's back at my side and I leash him or hold him until the other person is out of sight. Of course, the worst thing my dog will do is lick you to death or whop you with his tail.

Totally OT, but I recently adopted a stray kitten. I was a little worried that the dog might bully him. Yesterday, I rounded the corner into the living room and saw the dog sitting in my hubby's chair with . . . well, look for yourself: http://justbeeme.com/mingandnabisco.jpg That's some ferocious dog, huh? Big ole rough, tough creampuff.

Dina, keep a weather eye on that wound! Many hugs attached (just close your eyes and they will flow through the computer).

Mine too!! Now I grew up with dogs and like them, but my sons are rather nervous around them and do not like them at all. For some reason, there are an awful lot of people that seem to think that kids SHOULD like dogs and when they cross my kids on the trail they think they should let the kids pet their dog. They let the dog sniff all over the kids while my kids just stand still hoping the dog will go away. Then there are some that seem to insist-- oh, he's a nice dog, see! I have to GROWL at them, "They DON'T like dogs!" And put the kids behind me.

My kids have a pet lizard and a rat. They like to show people their pets but under no circumstances are they ever supposed to force their very tame pets (I don't think you could force that lizard to do harm) on anyone.

I often wonder how much these people that seem to think it's fine to force their dog on my sons would like it if they forced their pet rat or bearded dragon on them.

Forcing someone to face something they don't like is NEVER a good thing! I have people all the time try to force kids to like a clown. DUH! There are some who are afraid. I try to put the kid in charge saying they can come to me when ready, but sometimes there are older siblings and parents who INSIST that they have to come over, and laugh when the child (and sometimes adult) shows fear.

My kids have issues with dogs too. They have to feel comfortable about it before they approach and they are getting better about it. Maybe the Wolf cubs have issues because the dogs are from another Pack. Hmmm.

Ironically, the youngest has never liked anything with fur or fluff. He was terrified of baby ducks when we first got them! I told them they were just little pillows and let him touch them lightly. With a look of disgust and horror, he would "force" himself to brave the repulsive object murmuring, "just a pillow, just a pillow, just a pillow". He finally got to liking them.

On the flip side, he would go CRAZY over CUTE hermit crabs, snakes, bugs, spiders, and now his very beloved Bearded Dragon he carries around and strokes.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

We like reptiles too. We have a doggie.... medium sized corgi mix.... and 3 aquatic turtles.

Not all doggies dislike me..... I've been letterboxing with Frank before and enjoyed my company...... and he's a very well behaved dog. But.... I don't think he KNOWS he's a dog.
hahahahaha
Maybe that's why he likes me !!!!

And it probably wasn't even you - maybe your pants flapped or something and that set him off - it's hard to tell with those littler guys, who can be rather high strung. Our little high strung dog (who may be part Westie, he has the hair) can't stand dad the muggle fox and BARKS at hime!! And this is after living with him for over a year. Now that I think about it - he pretty much hates everyone but me (obviously a dog of excellent taste - lol!). He will tolerate Baby Fox for a few minutes but does not like to be petted by anyone. But he's the only decent watch dog on the place!

I agree with everyone about the dog control - that woman was not being a responsible pet owner! We have a Boston Terrier who is SO friendly and LOVES everyone so much that everyone she sees is "LOOK, MY NEW BEST FRIEND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" I don't like to take her letterboxing because she's SO busy trying to greet everyone that I get tired of dealing with her. And at 6 years old I think she's calmed down about as much as she's gonna! But she's a great hiker, lots of energy.

Hope you're ok Dina B.!!!!
