Hard to say how long it took. Less than a month, but not really. I started it at the beginning of this month, but only read it on lunch breaks, a few minutes before bed, maybe an hour ot two on the weekends, and one weekend in the month I forgot it at work over the weekend.

My hubby David quit too because he could not remember who was who. The edition I read has a nice section up front with the main families, so for the first 400 pages or so, I kept refering to the list. After that, I was fine.

Quote I guess nothing worth including in a test happened in the middle. ;-)

UGH, the last section of the epilogue KILLED me. I enjoyed the families. I yelled at them. I called some idiots & fool! But the last section was not about them, but about Tolstoy's take on "history" and how it is subjective, etc. etc. I was so bored I had to read it aloud, very loud, to understand what he was saying.

But the middle part was good.

but there are so many other, easier, books in the pile by my bed that it probably will not happen

Believe me, that pile is big...I've seen it! I think she still has some of MY books in that pile, I wonder when I might be getting them back.

When I read it in high school I remember I had to make myself a huge family tree/cheat sheet so I could remember everybody. Plus, some people would have like 3 different names they might be called, with nicknames and all...

Congratulations!

One day I hope to get through "Godel, Escher, Bach". I start it every few years and get about 2 chapters in before I lose momentum. Some day...

I think I bought that one about 20 years ago. I just took it off of the shelf--yep, the bookmark is still on Chapter 3! But I like to look at the pictures...

I read that one in college for a phylosphy class, I don't remember much about but I am pretty sure that I enjoyed it.
