Discovered an interesting side-line to Letterboxing - whenever I'm out on the trail, I find myself picking up rocks....pretty ones, odd shaped ones, colorful ones - whatever catches my eye. Makes for a heavy pack after a while, but they do have a certain appeal! Anyone else do this??

I do this when I go the beach. I put them in my aquarium after a good cleaning/boiling.

I love rocks. But...we don't have any nice ones down here (central Florida). It stinks.

Absolutely! Forest Troll and I have been doing this forever, long before I discovered letterboxing. I have rocks from all over the country. And they bring back memories of when I was 'there' when I see them. I was a big rock hound when I lived in Oregon. You had agates and Jasper and shell fossils on the coast. There were many kinds of lava rocks and Thunder eggs in the Cascades. One of my favorites is a green lace lava. Have fun with rockhounding!

Keep in mind--that's illegal in certain places (such as national parks, as you might have guessed!)

Just so you don't a nasty surprise from an over-zealous park ranger or something. *nodding*

I have rocks in my flower beds from almost everywhere I go...and the small rocks are in my flower pots. Some that my sone gave me over the years are put away in little trinket boxes that I prowl thru occasionally. I even have little pebbles and rocks from Spain. The only trip I ever took abroad.

My honey and the kids have always just kinda shook their heads at my "rock hording" as they call it.

I started collecting heart-shaped rocks a couple of years ago and I have several in different sizes.

My Granny (the one who just died) would ALWAYS pick up rocks from her travels. As we were going thru her stuff last week. We found many rocks. She would mark on them with a Sharpie where they were from and the date or there would be a piece of paper wrapped around it w/ the info! When I went on a trip with her to Minnesota, I would not let her pick up just any rock, I purchased one from the Gift Shop that was painted with a scene from where we visited! Yes, I have picked up the odd rock here and there. Feathers and small dinosaur fossils/teeth/shells too when in parts of Montana.

My hushand once carried a fairly heavy rock down from Mt. Manadnock because it looked like a whale! I also collect sand/dirt from interesting places I've been. I pour it into jars, slap on a label and display it. You'd be surprised how different soil can look from all over the planet.
I asked my nephew if he could send some of the Iraqi desert home but that's prohibited. Also, my Aunt brought back some sand from White Sands via her shoe. That was illegal to remove as well. Ryan's right, you need to make sure your not defacing a National Park or something!!!

Take care, Orion
