Holy Cow...how could I have forgotten THAT today?

Went to check on a box I had planted....and then stopped at the North Carolina Arboretum to grab a couple of boxes...I thought they would be right around the Visitor's Center or something...ummm...no.

Read the clues and thought...no biggie...they don't look too far...soooo....

The 2 year old and I grab the first one...not bad...not even 1/2 mile roundtrip....then we started on the next one...and it kept going...and going...and going...turns out it a bout 1 mile goin' in....and it was muggy....and it rained....and then it got steamy and hot.....but the boy kept goin'....

Then he chased a butterfly into the stream...and was not happy about getting soaked...(You'd think he would have learned this by now).....Then he ran away into some raspberry bushes because he was tired and a little miffed about the hike....(hey...he's got short legs)...and the prickers did NOT go over well.....(the skinned knee was from yesterday...completely different epic struggle in his life)

At that point...a meltdown was imminent...and the boy wasn't doin' too well either ;) He had had enough of this walkin' business so I had to carry him for the last 1/2 mile back to the car.....NOT cool.

I'm wiped out...he's crashed.....

I'll join him in a minute as I have to nap before I run a trivia contest at a local pub tonight.....that's how I roll.....

So remember...always look at the distances....even if you already always look at the distances....remember to always look at the distances....

I second that! One time last fall, we went to find a couple at a park. There were 3 to find, but they were SO far away from each other and it was over a 4 mile hike by the time we got back. Thank goodness it was a coolish day, but the 2 year old got too tired, so I carried him (he fell asleep) the last 3/4 a mile or so.

I am SO sorry about all those scratches your little guy got. Doubly so since one of those boxes was mine. :-(

He is adorable and don't they always look cuter when they're asleep. If you've got some heavy-duty hand lotion or something (I use lanolin), it'll help those scratches heal quicker.

I may need to check out that contest one of these days and meet you. ;-)

No worries at all.....he's a tough guy......

I put some Aloe on his legs while he was sleeping....Mommy will be home soon to administer the proper kisses and what not.....

Right now the Sox are on...and that seems to be working fine....

Awww - he's so cute!!!

I had a similar experience at teh Arboretum, except the kids did great - I was the big weenie. I wore the wrong shoes for a hike - they wore the right shoes for the hike...! If I had (as you pointed out ;-)) checked the distances, I could have put on the correct shoes which were _in the car_!!!!! So, with the memory of uncomfortable blisters, I always check distances twice ;-))

Aw, poor little guy! What a cutie!
Our 5 yo found his favorite box ever yesterday. It was a driveby in Mystic CT near an enormous boulder. He got to play around the rock with Daddy, while I stamped in in the car. As much as he loves the outdoors he does not love to hike!
