Important Note
All Boxes will be temporary at this particular park and removed on Sunday afternoon. We are diligently working with the park staff to see if they may remain for a few additional weeks.
A little bit about the park. The IN Dunes State Park totals about 2200 acres and features 16 miles of trail easy-rugged. Located on the shores of Lake Michigan it provides visitors with an opportunity to explore diverse landscapes in the Midwest. It features a variety of habitats that can be seen from the trails. It is surrounded by the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, a federally administered park of 15,000 acres.
We have spoken to both park Naturalists at the park and they have given us their blessing to host this event at their park. They have encouraged us by sharing many specific locations for us to plant so you will see the best that the park has to offer. As a courtesy, we highly encourage the "leave no trace" mentality that letterboxers are known for. There are very few rules that the DNR has for us, all are posted on the map. However, there is one that is unique to this park: ALL ALCHOLIC BEVERAGES ARE PROHIBITED WITHIN THE BOUNDRY OF THE PARK.
EARTH CACHE
The Indiana Dunes State Park does maintain its own Earthcache. Its a rather neat item (not the cache itself) but the fact that you get to visit very scenic areas of the park.
For more information visit: Indiana Dunes EarthCache
UPDATE February 18th
If you don't have a campsite at the Dunes, chances are that you will not be able to get one. As of this morning there were 2 campsites left for the weekend of June 14 to 16th. I did say that they go fast...for alternative campsites you can camp in the National Lakeshore. These are 1st come/1st serve sites, no reservations $15/day Credit/Debit Only. Please review the lodging information pdf on the LBGLK yahoo group for more information and a listing of some hotels in the area. Also once you know your lodging information you can edit the Database to add it in for all on the group.
The itinerary has yet to be set in stone, however expect it within the next few weeks. Also if anyone is interested in hosting a Friday night event, there is a shelter in the campground that doesn't require reservations. I can inquire with the park ranger if we can use it that evening.
UPDATE Mar 22, 2013: T-shirts
Anyone interested in a t-shirt long or short sleeve, or a sweatshirt please contact me by AQ mail to get my address. The short sleeve is 18.00, long sleeve 20.00 and sweatshirt 35.00. They are really sweet. The front has great lakes logo and glg 2013. The back has Work, Sleep or Play Letterbox the Great Lakes way. They come in Youth xs,s,m,lg and adult S-3x. If you want them sent to your house you will need to include postage otherwise I will have them at the event for you! They are a design effort between the BT's and myself and if I do say so they are pretty spectacular. I may have to get one of each.LOL
