Shawnee Prairie Nature Center

Description

Please join us for Fairies on the Prairie at Shawnee Prairie Preserve and Nature Center. Address is 4267 State Route 502, Greenville, OH 45331.

2011 was our first Prairie event (Little Event on the Prairie). It was small but well attended - which is suprising due to the rainy day. However, great fun was had by all!!

This time around will be bigger and better. We have permission and the support of the Darke County Park Department. Cookie Cutter and I are both volunteers for the Park Department and have been introducing the idea and concept of letterboxing to the Park Staff. We have permission to host our event and plant temporary traditional boxes for the weekend. However, at this time the Park Dept is asking that permanent letterboxes not be planted in their parks. I am hoping to show a positive representation of letterboxing and eventually receive approval for a full letterboxing program / guideline for the Park Department. At this time we are taking it step by step.

Enjoy a day of fun with a pot luck luncheon. We will provide the main dish (buns, pulled pork, ham salad and chicken salad) and ask each group to bring a covered dish, snack, etc.

Because we are volunteers the Park Department is allowing us to use their facility at no cost. Therefore, we are asking for donations. It can be a cash donation or an item needed by the park. A list has been posted below of items the park is in need of.

One thing the park is collecting are tin cans - like soup or vegetable cans (no tiny or skinny cans - regular size). The cans need to have the label removed and be washed out. These cans will be used for a craft project at Prairie Days in September 2013.

Everyone that donates will receive a door prize ticket. We will have 8 - 11 door prizes. Each item lovingly created by a letterboxer.

We are planning on several walking trails of fairy stamps. Many whimsical ideas are in the works. Stamps will not just be mine and Cookie Cutter's - we have donated stamps (many from out of our area - including Canada). There will be an event stamp, tabletop stamps, other event stamps, HIPS boxes, and several other fun creations.

The trail stamps will be temporary plants. They will be available all day Saturday and all day Sunday. If the clues are ready we may even release some clues online Friday for those arriving early. There will be minimal logbooks. We will have one main logbook inside at the sign in table. A few boxes have books that the carver provided and would like stamped.

You are welcome to bring your own event boxes to share - we ask that you stay within the theme of fairies or whimsical.

Please AQ mail me if you have any questions.

See you in June!!

May 21, 2013: Event Boxes
Fairies on the Prairie is getting closer and closer :) I have a few updates I will be posting in the next few days.

DS just posted on the boards - not sure if everyone will see it so I am sending it as a message as well.....

Hi ya'll. I'm planning to attend this gathering next month. I wanted to mention that I will be bringing my U-haul Graphics Event box. Check out the "clue" for this event box. If you want to carve a U-haul graphic to be included in the box, let me know which state you want and I'll reserve the state for you. This event box has lots of events in its future, so you will get many finders/log-ins. Looking forward to meeting boxers from other areas. :)

All the images are found on:

It is just on the edge of town no more than 20 min from Shawnee Prairie. Any questions - AQ mail me.

Jun 20, 2013: Fairies on the Prairie
I cannot believe we are a day away. When we listed the event it seemed ages away. Now it is almost here.

We have been busy getting all our fairy business in order. Today we started planting the trails. It was beautiful out. Looks to be great weather on Saturday as well.

A few reminders - bring bug spray and be careful of poison ivy. It seems to be everywhere this year. We've done the best we can to avoid it.

Also - bring colorful ink pads. Many of the stamps for the event are borrowed - several have never seen a black ink pad. I'd like to return them as such if at all possible.

I have had several ask about the trails and several concerned on getting all the boxes. I have posted trail pictures to the photo album. There is no rough terrain - most of it is level and all paths are cleared. The first trail has been planted and is available now and the clues are posted online for those wanting to start hunting fairies early. You will receive ALL clues in your packet when you sign in on Saturday.

There will be 69 trail boxes and 13 indoor boxes. There are 3 permanent plants at the Prairie as well. Plenty to keep you busy but should be doable in a day.

Feel free to take 2 - 3 days to get the stamps. As I mentioned - Trail 1 is out now - clues are online - box numbers are 221998, 221999, 222000. It is one long trail broken down into 3 series. If you do the entire trail it'll be approximately 2 hours. Following them in order takes you in loops. Starts and returns you to a main trail. You can do 1 and 3 as a loop and skip two also. I will also have copies of these clues Friday evening at the Maid-Rite event.

The trail stamps will be left out until 5:00 on Sunday. If you don't get them all Saturday you can return Sunday.

Saturday the Nature Center opens at 9 a.m. We plan on being all set up inside by 10. If you arrive early to start on Trail 1 the bathrooms are indoors and won't be open until 9.

Sunday the Nature Center is closed. There will be no access to the bathrooms.

A reminder the local Radio Club will also be using the Prairie this weekend. They should be mainly in the area of the Shelter house. We have avoided planting too near this area.

Bring your camera - binoculars - bug spray - park donation - and pot luck item.

If you haven't decided on a pot luck item - we seem to have plenty of food - community use bug spray or other such items are a possibility.

Any questions - please AQ mail me.

We will see you soon!!
Tina

Jun 24, 2013: Fairy Event - Missing Boxes
Thank you all again for attending Fairies on the Prairie. What a delightful weekend.

All of the event trail boxes have been pulled. We are happy to say of 69 only 3 are unaccounted for. Sad to not be able to find these 3 but glad it was a small number.

We may have lost them in the rain or to critters. Hard to say. Also, when it did start raining at least one box didn't get back right away. If you happen to have one of these missing stamps with your things please AQ mail me so we can get it back to the carver.

Good news!! Romance Afloat has been found. It was box 11 for Trail 1 - Series 2 - Beaver Path / Woodcock Prairie. A critter had gotten ahold of the pouch - pulled the cloth and stamp out - and had it way under the bridge. So if anyone hunted this stamp and still needs the image please AQ mail me.

Below is a list of the 3 missing boxes. If you had any problems or concerns when you hunted them that may help us locate them please let me know.

Box 10 - Phee's River Transport
Trail 1 - Series 1 - Ancient Oaks & Deer Run Trail

Box 2 - Busy with Birds
Trail 2 - Series 1 - Woodpecker Woods Trail

Box 8 - Fuchsia Up the Garden Path
Trail 2 - Series 1 - Woodpecker Woods Trail

Thank you all again for traveling for our event and making it such a success.
