Description

We are throwing our first event and warmly invite you to participate if this fits your style. Indoor letterboxing at its best…lots of coloring and inky hands! Here are the details:

Saturday, February 4, 2017
10:00 am – 4:00 pm
Grand Ravines North County Park (inside heated lodge)
9920 – 42nd Ave.
Jenison, MI

This event will be a small, cozy INDOOR non-traditional event at the lodge at Grand Ravines North, overlooking the Grand River. The focus of the event will be on getting to know other letterboxers, enjoying friendships, exchanging signature stamps and personal travelers, and stamping lots of event boxes! There may also be a few surprises in store.

Letterboxers who attend will be asked to do the following:
1. Provide one (or more) event boxes based on the theme, MY BUCKET LIST. It can be something you’ve checked off your bucket list or something that is still waiting to happen. Event boxes need a handcarved stamp (carved by you or another letterboxer), a handmade logbook, and a non-traditional container. Creativity is encouraged, but not required.
Disclaimer: Do not let this scare you away! Letterbox carves of all abilities are welcome.
2. Each letterboxer will be asked for a $5 minimum donation upon arrival to offset the cost of the lodge rental ($10/family). Any money beyond the rental cost will be donated to the Ottawa County Parks.
3. Boxes will need to be listed as event boxes on AtlasQuest.

HOW TO LIST BOXES:
1. List box as an event box on www.atlasquest.com.
2. Do not write anything in the clue area.
3. Write down the AtlasQuest box number on your event stamp and logbook.
4. Link your event box to the event listing. Do this by clicking “Add Event Box” on the event page. Then type in the EXACT NAME of the box.
4. After the event, retire the box.

EVENT BOXES:
Event boxes will be collected and displayed on tables for all letterboxers to access and stamp throughout the day.

FOOD: Beverages will be provided. In order to keep this simple and cleanup easier, letterboxers will need to bring their own lunch and snacks. There are fast food restaurants within about 10-15 minutes of the park. There is also a refrigerator and microwave in the kitchen that can be used.

A FEW NO-NO’s:
No pets. No alcohol. No smoking.

Questions? Please AQ mail any of the event hosts. We will do our best to answer.

Nov 17, 2016: Event Stamps
Hey all,

We are so glad you plan to join us on February 4 for our first ever event. Thank you!

Our plan is for this to be a more laid-back event, but we did want to let you know that we are planning to have a raffle. For each event stamp that you bring, we will be giving you one raffle ticket. Raffle items will include mostly letterboxing related items, but don't be surprised if a chocolate treat somehow ends up being on the raffle table.

Please check in with any of us with questions. In the meantime, count your blessings; we have so much to be thankful for everyday!

Dec 8, 2016: Winterfest 2017: My Bucket List
Hello all,

I know you may all be busy with the holiday preparations and celebrations, but I thought I'd send a quick update on our February event.

It's going to be so enjoyable :).

First of all, I'm noticing some event boxes being added...wonderful and thank you!

Our plan for the event is to begin with just taking time to meet, greet, and mix. We have a Bingo game planned; if you get 5 signature stamps in a row on your card, there will be a special event stamp you can receive.

But we also want to encourage the exchange of signature stamps and personal travelers during this time. For those of you who are new to events, click on the personal travelers button. These are special stamps that you can also ask individual letterboxers about. Some of them require you to simply ask for them; others require some "homework" ahead of time.

There will also be HIPS boxes (Hidden in Plain Sight) available. Check out the AQ glossary for a definition if this is a new concept. (http://www.atlasquest.com/about/glossary/h.html#hips)

We also have a letterboxer who is bringing along some unique event boxes, (not particularly "Bucket List" themed), along with two series of traveling "word of mouth boxes" that are AQ registered as traditionals. We will clearly have many boxes to enjoy and appreciate.

And, there will still be more surprises in store. Anticipation is half the fun, right?

One last thing (unrelated to this event)...are you familiar with the Great Lakes Bingo event? It happens every year and is believed to be the slowest Bingo game in the world. All are welcome, but must be signed up and ready to go by December 31, 2016. Details are on the Great Lakes Yahoo Group (you need to be a member to play, so sign up here (I think this is the link):

Have a wonderful December and the most joyful of celebrations,
Angel Winks

Jan 4, 2017: Winterfest 2017 - One month away!
2017 has arrived and with it comes the reality that Winterfest 2017 is on the horizon. We are very excited to host this first event!

Reminders:
The event begins at 10 a.m. Plan on arriving right around that time and not earlier. The event organizers are able to get in around 9:30, but we have several "set-up" details to attend to and we want to take care of those so that when you arrive, we can give you our full attention.

If by chance you do come to the area early and want to do some winter outdoor letterboxing, there are several letterboxes within a few miles.

The lodge is a very nice, open space with a fully functioning kitchen. This means there will be a refrigerator and microwave for storing/heating up lunches, if need be.

Your letterboxes should be listed before the event; check the original event details for how to do that. Several event boxes have been listed and it looks like we are off to a great start with those.

My guess is that there will be more letterboxes than any one person can stamp in a day. My suggestion would be to enjoy the day with other letterboxers as well as those letterboxes that you do indeed stamp in throughout the day.

A few extras if you wish...door prizes (1 entry for each event letterbox you bring), a letterbox Bingo game, HIPS boxes, and so forth. It should be a good day for indoor letterboxing.

Until then, enjoy January!

Jan 21, 2017: Two Weeks until Winterfest!
Hello all,

With only two weeks to go, we are anticipating a wonderful time on February 4 at Winterfest. The weather forecast looks fabulous for traveling, so we will hope that holds true. Today's forecast is a high of 58 degrees, a very unseasonable temperature (record breaking possibly?). In two weeks, it is predicted to be a high of 31 degrees, still nothing to complain about when you're talking Michigan winters.

The biggest request I have of you is to get your event box listed before the event so that others can access it easily. I'll include the instructions from the original posting below:

HOW TO LIST BOXES:
1. List box as an event box on www.atlasquest.com.
2. Do not write anything in the clue area.
3. Write down the AtlasQuest box number on your event stamp and logbook.
4. Link your event box to the event listing. Do this by clicking “Add Event Box” on the event page. Then type in the EXACT NAME of the box.
4. After the event, retire the box.

For those new to events, here are some things you might want have with you:
1. A logbook with lots of pages. You will be stamping a lot of images at the event. One letterboxer that I know has a separate logbook she uses just for events; another I know creates a new logbook for each event. Most, I believe, use the same logbook for traditional finds and events.
2. A black stamp pad. Many of the stamps most likely will be carved as outlines and will require black ink.
3. Markers for stamping. Of course, there will definitely be stamps that need coloring...
4. Your signature stamp. You will need to stamp your signature stamp in each logbook. An idea that some have used for events is to prestamp small white stickers with your signature stamp, allowing you to save some time in the process of putting your signature stamp into logbooks (although others seem to frown upon this idea...it's your call). Others have purchased customized pre-inked stamps. However, most stick with the traditional method of the hand-carved stamp and stamp pad.

Lastly, we look forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones. One of our wishes for our event is to help us get a bit better connected as a letterboxing community.

Blessings to all of you!

Jan 29, 2017: Clues to solve for event
Hello all,

A set of clued Christmas letterboxes has been sent to Winter Fest 2017 (not "My Bucket List" themed). There are a total of 12 puzzle boxes called PUZZLING GIFTS (#186497). They each are in a locked box, some with a number combination and some with a word combination. The clue will give you the combination to the locked box.

If you are interested in solving these puzzles in advance, some of the puzzles are in the clues files on the Great Lakes Letterboxing Yahoo site. The link is below.

https://beta.groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/LBGLK/files/Clues%20and%20More%20Clues.../Winter%20Fest%202017/

If you don't belong to the Great Lakes Letterboxing Yahoo site, you might want to request to join. Otherwise, AQ message me with an email address and I'll send you a pdf of the clues.

You may also get a copy of the clues at the event to solve them there.

There will be many, many letterboxes available without clues, but these will definitely satisfy those who love a puzzle clue.
