Speaking of Cistes and protecting them, did you see the link on the right-hand side of the page for how to protect them from the elements? They advise wrapping the container in a trash bag, twisting the bag, then folding the rest of the bag back over and zip-tying (or is that a clothespin?) that end. Seems like a lot of work to take them apart.

Quote ...include segments on letterboxing, geocaching, benchmarking, bookcrossing and, thanks to Kirbert, cistes.

Are there anymore stashing games out there that would be fun to include or at least that I can learn more about?

There used to be a web site listing all such games, but I can't seem to find it right now! Anyhow, I can add a few:

Terracaching:

http://www.terracaching.com/

Exactly the same as geocaching.

Where's George?

http://www.wheresgeorge.com/

Not actually a stashing game per se, just a way to waste a lot of time tracking dollar bills as they travel around the country.

Geodashing

http://geodashing.gpsgames.org/

A computer spits out a whole list of completely random coordinates, and your job is to be the first one to get there. A great game for people who like trespassing, because a goodly number of the coordinates are likely to end up on private property. Grew out of a game where people were supposed to find the grid crosses, take pictures at every spot with coordinates like N30° 00.000', W 084° 00.000', but basically all those spots got found so they had to come up with a new game.

Mapsurfer boxes

http://www.mapsurfer.com/boxes/index.html

Arguably letterboxing, but perhaps should be listed separately.

Earthcache

http://www.earthcache.org/

Nothing stashed at the location, just a neat place to see. I think this idea may have been commandeered by geocaching.com, since they now list earthcaches as well.

Waymarking

http://www.waymarking.com/

Kinda like earthcache only different. Wait a minute, I don't think it's different at all.

ToyVoyagers

http://www.toyvoyagers.com/

Kinda like geocaching travel bugs only different.

TravelerTags

http://www.travelertags.com/

Kinda like geocaching travel bugs only different.

You could also list Dartmoor letterboxing separately, since it's apparently a different game than regular letterboxing.

Besides all this, there are several "armchair treasure hunts" based on books or other publicly-released clues. Many of these have serious prizes; Cadbury sponsored one in which a dozen solid gold eggs were buried. Often the idea is that people buying the book finance a prize worth thousands of dollars. Originally they involved getting out and finding the prize, but after several of the prizes were muggled, the idea of never leaving your armchair and merely figuring out where it is and submitting your conclusions online has taken precedence.

Well, I'm probably forgetting a few, but that oughta keep you guys busy for a while.

Nice list Kirbert.

I'll add:

Ecoscavenger
http://www.ecoscavenger.com/

From the ecoscavenger website:
The creator of EcoScavenging is a former letterboxer who didn't feel quite right about hiding man-made objects in natural areas. Creators are encouraged to provide an online guestbook for each EcoScavenge with accessibility going to those who can answer a question or two about the location. Creators are also encouraged to post a trading card size image (2.5 x 3.5 in) of the location with the name of it and their EcoScavanging nickname. Finders can print it, trim it and place in a scrapbook or trading card book. (Kind of like a virtual letterbox but you have to visit a location and then you get an electronic Letterbox Trading Card as a reward for getting the questions right.)

Seems a lot easier just to use a better container that can withstand the elements, like a lock-n-lock container which do real well.
