Letterboxing the Game
Board: Letterbox Chatter

I've received a lot of mail and FB requests by people who say they'd want a personal copy of letterboxing: the game.

I'm looking for info on interest to see if it's worth it trying to get some copies printed.

What's the most you would be willing to pay for a copy? A comparable commercial card game retails for $40. I'm not looking to have a huge profit margin but I'm also not able to get their printing discounts ;)

Funny: $25
Interesting: $35
Educational: $45

Would you be willing to pre-order the game?

Agree: Yes

Would you prefer linen finish over smooth finish? (Increases cost)

Huh?: Yes

Would you prefer to have access to the files and have them printed yourself instead of getting a full, printed game?

Hug: Yes

Hi Aiphid,

For those of us who didn't get the memo, what exactly is Letterboxing: the Game?

It's a fun card game that has stamp images on it by many different carvers. You can see some examples of the cards in the above link.

For the record, I would preorder and pay for at least 3 games with the higher end finishes and play book. One to save in mint condition and one to play. And add one for a surprise gift.

Doing a quick cost estimate, it looks like it might end up costing $25 for a basic version of the game. Printed cards with smooth or linen finish, cheap printed rules, and no custom box. Does that sound like it's reasonable?

Right, it's a deck building card game with a letterboxing theme. You start with a basic deck of drive bys and store bought stamps and purchase new cards to improve your deck. At the end of the game, the player with the most finds wins. Each type of card features a carving by a different letterboxer.

I have a geocaching board game my friend got me. I don't really geocache, but I have fun playing the game. Card players, not just letterboxers, would probably enjoy your game too. Add in the art factor, you can sell it on etsy and overcharge. ;-)

I can't wait to get a copy! I'm going to an event next fall and that'd be so fun to play. Do you make the signature cards? I'd be willing to pay extra for a Hosmer's card. Just throwing that out there.

I know that's just a ploy to get yourself onto the Wassa's funniest posts list!!! And it worked! ;o)

I have a geocaching board game my friend got me.

There's been a few geocaching games. I saw a card game recently on kickstarter. But there are so many more geocachers than letterboxers. I think ~7/10 people have heard of geocaching :)

I doubt that there'd be enough interest in the game to justify producing enough for muggles, but I might offer some extras for people if they're interested in doing kickstarter-like payment tiers. Like a pack of loggable LTCs containing one of each card in the game.

But, I'm really just looking to get the game out to the people that would want to play it for the least amount of work possible and at the lowest cost possible.

Haha, I guess I should have started at the high-end for funny. Or we can just get an embeddable poll option for the boards and then we'd be able to leave the buttons alone :)

Whatever you do will be great, I'm sure. I'll be keeping an eye on the boards for when you're ready.

This is a fun game and I would be willing to purchase a set. Wolfie and I got to play it late at night at Paris Mtn. I'm interested to see how it works with more people. Yep, it was just the two of us and I won't say who won. :)

Wow, 25 agrees!

OK, I've gone ahead and created a tracker. I'll use the tracker to post updates and details. Please sign up if you are interested in the game. Signing up does not mean that you are reserving a copy, but it's the first step ;)

Interesting... That might be something that could be feasible. I'll try to think up some options and add them to the tracker.

25.00 i think, a little much for my retired self to pay for a deck of cards. Usually when I'm at an event i mingle with all boxers that I can, exchanging, tabletoppers, HIPS, HHH, food, whew!! I don't think i'd ever really play the game.

I use to collect LTC's, but lately i've been giving the collection away, downsizing.

don't get me wrong, cute game for those interested.

I'd love to get it done for cheaper than $25 so that more people could have it. Unfortunately, it costs $21.54 to have it printed and a small flat rate mailer costs $5.25 to send. But any price is too high for something you won't use! :)

I believe Witch Kittin was talking about a print and play version. Are those available and how much would they cost? I'm interested in a PnP version as well. Thanks!

Once the base set, expansion, and all the custom cards are finished, I should have some time to put together some PDFs for a print n' play version.

Given your costs and the effort you have put into the game, I think the price is quite reasonable.

The last print and play game I got (an awesome Dr. Who one) cost me over $60 to print. I'm glad I was able to find a pretty good price for this one. Unfortunately, since we're not printing thousands of copies we can't get too good of a deal ;) But it's dirt cheap compared to a retail version of the same style of game.

And if you think of them as LTCs, that's less than 10 cents a card! I bet that's a lot cheaper than most swaps.

A bit of a tangent ... I want to submit my image, but I am having a time thinking of my special power. How to not sound too self-important and yet, amuse the audience. Still working on it.

Also - still waiting for the Great Lakes image from Spring Chick, unless she sends it directly to you. I'll check again early in the morning.

True!
Even if you don't play them it's an incredibly unique LTC collection with many different carvers uniquely printed that can even be used as playing cards. I know one set is going out just as a keepsake because Safari Man participated in it.

And anyone who has ever been on the receiving end of getting one of Aiphid's many donated boxes or enjoyed the free version of Box Radar, or even participated in a swap (where he returns any extra postage!) knows he's not printing for profit. For all his time and effort, it's all for the cost to print them and an option whether you think it's worth it to pay to have them printed.

Print and play files should be available soon. I've given the carvers a chance to opt-out of having their artwork publicly available for download.
