They just don't care. I just find it frustrating. To me, it is a total lack of respect.

I myself TRY to play by the Code of Conduct, or so I thought until I realized that I am just as guilty as the planter.

I found a series of LB's in a state park, I went in and found them, I'm guilty even tho they had a "good" excuse as to why they didn't follow the C of C.

Just this week-end I found a box on National Government land on a trail on the Blue Ridge Parkway.Until just recently I never even thought about boxes should not be on the BRP because our code of conduct says not to plant in National Parks. And the BRP is not a State thing it's a National thing.

I cry out when I see other having no lack of respect especially if it concerns MY stuff and overlook my own errors.

C of C says:

If you find a problem with the letterbox-maybe the clue needs updating or the letterbox needs maintenance-attempt to inform the owner of the letterbox of the problem.

Have you tried to respectfully contact the offensive LBer privately with your concerns?

Just out of curiosity, what does everyone consider "near"?

For example, if a park has two hiking/nature trails and there is a box on one, is the other trail off limits without permission? Is the whole park off limits? If it's a 4 mile trail and there is a box at MM3, is MM1 off limits? Two miles between boxes seems "far" to me.

I try to be respectful and ask, or plant in locations where there aren't already boxes so I'm not looking to start any arguments. I really am just honestly curious.

Pretty much sums it up, a bunch of nonsense that I have never bothered to read. Hate to say it, myself and plenty of others have been letterboxing long before there was some written "Code of Conduct," we didn't need it then, and we don't need it now.

There are no rules, you simply plant and if folks like it, they will find your box, if they don't they won't (there are boxes I will not search for), and you live or die by the choices you make.

People have told me "if you can see the other letterbox" they consider that "near". Definitely, 2 miles is not "near".

Maybe we can also use the geocache rule of thumb: 1/10 mile apart. For me, that's 2 minutes at my normal walking pace.

It's always good to contact others of our intent, and see if they mind if other boxes are near theirs.

Im sorry that happened. Now that I realise how close it was, and that they knew it was there, for sure.

I probably wouldn't retire mine if someone did that, but I WOULD contact them and ask them to please not do it again. I don't mind anyone planting in the same trails as mine, but out of the same field of vision woukd at least be nice. Accidental, no biggie. Make it a habit.... BIGGIE.

As I stated, this isn't the first time. When contacted, they get angry and claim that it is no big deal and that they feel they have as much right as anyone else. Not worth it. Same reason I am not calling them out specifically. It just doesn't really matter. Rules or no rules, my personal opinion is that it is a deliberate lack of respect. But if they want to play that way, no one is going to stop them. I will just respectfully play my way and remove my older box. Not much I can do about it and I am not going to come down to their level and play dirty. Moving on now...

You'd like to think so, wouldn't you? Unfortunately, I had a boxer plant about 2 feet from one of mine. When I asked them about it, they claimed to not know my box was there. However, they had logged a find on my box 6 months earlier! And even after I asked them to move their poaching plant, they didn't do it. So sometimes knowing the rules doesn't make a lick of difference.

I just have to add a recent experience with poaching. It was the best series I've ever found. A hoot. 7 boxes poaching upon the next one, all within 100 square feet area. Despite being only feet apart, it took me about an hour and a half to find 6/7 (one was really well hidden - I plan to return).

I am new, so don't know the accepted standard, but I was surprised to find two boxes within 50-100 feet of each other yesterday, each hidden by a different person (not a series). I was glad to find them both, but since there are not a lot around, it was strange that they were so close together.

Just out of curiosity, was this location special in any way? Some people plant a letterbox at a location they want to take you to (Look at this view!) or if it is referenced off a distinctive landmark (the only sycamore tree in the park~walk 10 steps pass it...). Those are reasons why they might be "close" to each other.

It is possible that the planters are both unaware of the other's box. Or, they have agreed that it's okay to be in the proximity of each other, or, you have a poacher...(!).

I don't think there is an accepted standard ~ depends on the region. I would say (when you start planting) to always ask. Others would say there are no rules to Letterboxing and do whatever you want.

BTW, welcome! I like to find multiple boxes in an area too!

Oh my goodness that's hilarious!

The location itself is nice (open space park in an urban area), but it was strange to me that the only two boxes in the park were so close. You had to walk up steps from the trail to one of them (which was right near the top of the steps) and then walk another 30 feet or so to the other under a log. There were lots of other potential spots, which is why is struck me as strange. If it was a series, it would have made more sense. Of course, I am coming from a geocaching background, where there is a distance rule.
BTW-I am going to plant on in that same nice park, but in a different location, because it is a nice spot.
