I'm heading out to Cane Creek tomorrow for boxing maintenance on ALL the boxes there if I can get to them. Many of these boxes have not been found since 2009.

Anyone is welcome to join me. However, I suspect the reason they haven't been found in so long is that I'm one of the closest active boxers in the area (at any hour away).

um, i want to join you. i want to join you in the worst way. . . however, there's this STOOPID lil thing called a job i have to go to, as well as about 900 miles between me and Cane Creek ( i know cuz i ran a search on AQ and it says so), and this silly BLIZZARD storm thingy coming tomorrow. . . and have i mentioned a serious lack of ink in my life?? (well, there was ink on Christmas because Mr. Umbrella's other name is Mr. Fabulous, but there was very little actual hiking involved, and i'm sitting here at work being jealous and whining, and now i have to go listen to other people whine and not snap their heads off and tell them they're weinies and should just suck it up or become zombies and get a life and go look for tupperware in the woods like good little doobees. . .)

Hmmm...Cane Creek? I will have to look that up, it doesn't sound familiar. Wondering if I was ever there?? Wish I could join ya but, well, you know... ;o)

Actually, tomorrow, I will be taking my boys to Roskilde, where 5 Viking ships were found and are on display. The temperatures in the sea preserved them so well that ship makers have been able to reproduce them and have sailed one of the reproductions (The Sea Stallion) to Ireland and back. Cool stuff...great bunch of history, all within a train ride away.

A neat little tid-bit that I discovered while looking through the grocery store flyers...apparently, the Danes include jokes and gags (buzzing handshakes, disappearing ink, fake barf/poop, etc.) in their New Years celebrations! They "celebrate" April Fools Day too, as if one day full of trickery wasn't enough!! LOL

Sounds like my kind of people! The boys should love that.

Well, it doesn't much matter what time. Probably 10am. But I'll be there most of the day. :) There is one box that I have NEVER been able to find. Only 2 people have ever found it:

But maybe on my 5th try...

I've got all the spare logbooks and baggies so just come whenever you like. I'll e-mail you my cell phone # (but I think you already have it). :)

It was the site of an event in 2007. You just started boxing about that time. It was an April Fool's / Tea Party theme-- lots of fun!
You'll probably recognize the Silly Sisters peeking out of the Men's restroom where they were toilet boxing. I believe that was the event they got their reputation as willing to do anything for a box! LOL!
We also had the Spaghetti tree with a box in it and an Easter Egg hunt for the kids.

I know the event is showing under me but it was actually 3M's last event. She did the very first NC event (Tarheel Treasure hunt). The one at Cane Creek was her 3rd event. But the night before the event she was taken to the ER. She called me from the ER to carry on the event. So at the last minute, I became the hostess.

She's okay, just not active in the 'boxing world anymore. She sure was a good time when she was part of the hobby. She was really the one that launched the community that we have in NC today with the early events she started (which were all planned openly with a lot of chatter on the boards).

I considered going, but an hour and an half away is more than I would like to go tomorrow. If you, or anyone, go less than an hour from our area this week, I might be interested. 8^)

Well, perhaps I'll do McDowell this weekend-- less than an hour and a half to RDHD and a weekend for the Red Cyclone. But one thing at a time-- let's see how I hold up after all of Cane Creek. Doing entire park maintenance is a lot of mileage (and I've gotten out of shape!).

I remember that event well, It was so much fun.

The day before the event we were boxing in a park and we met Walking Orange, we chatted with him and told him how excited we were about the event, we got a good surprised when he showed up at the event the next day.

Noydb has us going (for awhile) telling us he was working in carving a METAL stamp. We fell for it, hook, line, and sinker, for a few minutes until we realized he was joking us.

Met the silly sister and was wowed by them, so pretty and so friendly, not to mention how patient Julie was as she tried to teach me how to sew the binding of a logbook. At the time it was hard to find a small note book with out lines so we lber's had started to make our own so we could have blank white pages.

Mr Wolfie was the hotdog man cooking on the grill, yummy!

When a LBer we had never met found out we were staying the in same campground as them they insisted we come over for dinner. What a great time we had around the campfire with one playing his guitar and much laughter and bonding lasting friendships. Love you Hopeinnc, Carolina Drama Queen, and Flory Family.

Then is was sneaking into the park where the event had been held for some nightboxing fun.

Good memories, good friends, good times!!!!!

OMG!! That was you sitting near Papa Wolf and Noydb!! I always wondered about that. When I got home Papa Wolf told me how he started Noydb off on carving marble stamps or some other such silliness and Noydb just went with it and pretty soon they were having a whole made up conversation and enjoyed sucking others into believe it. I swear I can't take that man anywhere!! But I did wonder whose leg they were pulling!

I totally fell for asking NOYDB what those initials stood for! LOL!

He JUST started boxing, dropped into the event and won the raffle!

I think that may have been the first time I met you, ASD. And you had heard that I was looking for some camo duct tape on the boards, and you just showed up and handed me a couple rolls.

It was a very fun and friendly event. So many letterboxing events have such wonderful lasting memories! :)

Okay...I remember hearing about it afterwards...when I first started boxing, I was still trying to figure out all of the boards and such on AQ. I never knew the NC community was so vast and there were things like events! The first event I attended was in Raleigh, hosted by the lovely Pink Dragon :o)

You'll probably recognize the Silly Sisters peeking out of the Men's restroom where they were toilet boxing. I believe that was the event they got their reputation as willing to do anything for a box! LOL!

Yes..I got to see photos of this when I put together the "Farewell" scrapbook for Shoafsters. So glad it was caught on film...LOL

Beating the Butter?

Are they joking?

Fat Tax?

**I have only been here for 3 weeks so I am no expert on the Danish government...it's a learning process for me**

No, it's no joke.

One thing that is important to remember is that Denmark has socialist welfare reforms such as a free school system (college), free medical care, income support and unemployment benefits. They pay high taxes but those taxes take care of a vast amount of things, for example, we were told to expect a chimney sweep to come to our home once a year and clean our fireplace and chimney. It is done for every home owner and in turn there are less home fires, and thus less need for the fire department.

In my opinion, the new tax on foods high in saturated fats is just that: NEW. Any time a new tax is added to the things consumers buy, there is going to be push back. For instance, when taxes were raised on cigarettes...consumers were very unhappy at having to pay higher prices. Did it cause a few people to quit smoking? Maybe and hopefully they are healthier for it. My guess is that the Danish government is hoping for the same outcome.

What I have observed in the grocery stores is that cheese is a Danish favorite. Believe me when I say, the Danes will not give up their cheese. There is a cheese shop on the corner in my little town and there are always people going in and out. On the 23rd, there was a line out the door and onto the sidewalk. I don't think the small increase in the price of cheese has changed much of anything.

What is truly amazing is that it is hard to spot an overweight Dane. They are so active, most riding their bicycles or walking everywhere they go. The statistics in the article says that "just under 10% of the population is classified as obese." That is a remarkable number, one that every county and state should strive for.

Higher taxes that benefit the Danish population have historically been widely accepted. In a population that is already very healthy (in my opinion) maybe the people of Denmark aren't understanding the reasoning behind the decision. On the other hand, the government may be striving to increase the longevity of the Danes lifespan. The article never went into the specifics on how or if there was an increase in medical care costs, if it was directly or indirectly related to saturated fats.

This new tax is not the first time a government (whether Danish or American) stepped in to stop the rise in cost of medical care due to obesity. Several states were mentioned in the article (Arizona Alabama, and Mississippi)...something to think about...only time will tell.

Still a lot to weigh (no pun intended)...but one thing is for sure, I still buy 2% milk, real butter for cooking sweets and margarine low in sat. fats for everything else, and cheese. Yes, we love cheese.

I wish I could go.... but unfortunately, I can't on a weekday. :( I love Cane Creek Park, wish I could make it down there more often than I do. I have one box there that hasn't been found in almost 2 years - and I know the clues have changed - tables moved, signs taken down, etc.

Mama Wolf, any updates will be appreciated! :)

lol Of course I knew it wasn't a joke lol

Thanks for all your info on the new tax, I had already read it in the article.
You are so well informed, what is your opinion that next they'll tax sugar (soft drinks), what about wine?

I'm going to need to head back out tomorrow to finish the job. The days are just too blasted short now! I didn't get to the ones over near the purple trail side.

I'm going to update clues and statuses and send reports to planters. There were some that require serious rewrites of clues and some that are confirmed gone. Afterwards, I may do a clue guide to that park.

I checked on 15 Waxhaw boxes today.

5 were confirmed missing. Attempts were logged and notes sent to the planters.

The other 10 were given needed maintenance and all clues updated (there were some serious trail changes!). Then they were all logged as found (maintenance finds).

I should be able to easily get through the other 10 tomorrow.

Hopefullly, this will get all these old 2007 boxes that are still active back in action!

I know I walked at least 6 miles today-- and I needed it with all the holiday food I've been eating!!

Glad you had fun in Waxhaw. I'm having Letterboxing withdrawal. I have to go every few weeks. It looks like I'll have to go in South Charlotte on Friday, or I'll sneak away during the weekend some time. I have no more Fridays off because of my new teaching schedule. :( I've been confined to only weekend letterboxing again. Maybe on MLK day or something like that. Happy boxing in the Happy New Year!

I did the last 10 boxes today.
One of the 9 was confirmed missing. There's still ONE box (Freebird's Mother & Son) that I've never been able to find so I can't confirm that one.

The Purple and yellow trails had some MAJOR changes. I either have a better memory than I think or was incredibly lucky to find Shoafster's Backwards? and noydb's The Dead Lemur since the trails and markers were pretty much entirely gone out of the clues (I had to end up replanting Backwards? entirely since the clues AND hiding hole no longer existed at all!!). I gotta say that MissPeach's Grandma's Flowers was pretty challenging to find without the reference of the picnic tables. :)

All updates were sent to the planters. I also created a Clue Guide for the park but it is currently pending clue updates and a review/approval by the planters. All my clues have been updated.

There are now 17 (or 18 if that elusive Freebird box is out there) active boxes in Cane Creek to find. I'd say give everyone a week to do updates, print that clue guide, and go find those 4yr old, lonely boxes!! They are in good shape (and one's a Blue Diamond), waiting for finders! :)

Sounds like I may need a guide to this park in one of my favorite suburbs of Charlotte, with one of my favorite restaurants in the whole area-Mama Lena's! Is it still there? I'll have to research it, but I bet I could find someone to have a day adventure with me to Waxhaw. Especially during the weekend, or on Martin Luther King day. Happy New Year to all!
